Fleeing from an arranged marriage with the elderly Duke of Dunster, Manella arrives at a small village with her beloved horse, Heron, and her dog, Flash. Assuming a false identity, she takes the position of cook to the Marquis of Buckingdon, with whom she forms a friendship which turns to love.
