"The socio-political movements of the 1960s through the 1980s in the United States and in South Africa established a strong foundation upon which Black theatre arose and developed with a marked and unprecedented intensity. Form and content rose out of the artist s political and artistic stand against Western imperialism, colonialism and racism. For the first time in history, Black theatre in the United States and in South Africa examined and assessed the Black historical past of African Americans and South Africans fused with the historical moment of their present so that it could enlighten a future of freedom for their respective communities. In both countries, the Black Theatre Movement shared
